State Legislative Districts

Written by:

The tabs below represent the unique state legislative years as collected by the U.S. Census Bureau through the Redistricting Data Program. Each tab contains information specific to the year these state legislative districts were first in effect.  Typically, new products are generated only for state legislative districts with changes. Any changes to state legislative district plans are submitted to the Census Bureau by non-partisan state liaisons, identified by the governor and legislative leadership of each state at the beginning of each decade's Redistricting Data Program. Once these plans are processed and inserted into the MAF/TIGER database, the Census Bureau generates verification materials for each state to review and certify as accurate. Any reported changes to the verification materials were incorporated into these final products.

Block Equivalency Files

These Block Equivalency Files (BEFs) are the whole 2020 census tabulation block representations of the plans as submitted by the states to the U.S. Census Bureau. In instances where plans included split blocks, the Census Bureau requested that the state assign the whole block to one district for the purpose of tabulating data. Each .ZIP file contains a national block equivalency file and individual state files. The fields in these files should be imported as text to preserve leading zeros.

Split Block Listings

If the boundary of a state legislative district splits a 2020 Census tabulation block, the Census Bureau's maps and TIGER/Line shapefiles depict the correct location of the boundary. For data tabulation purposes, however, that census block is allocated in its entirety to the state legislative district specified to the U.S. Census Bureau by the state. These split block listings contain tables of all split blocks submitted by the states in their 2022 district plans and the district to which those split blocks are tabulated.

State Legislative District Maps

The State Legislative District (SLD) Reference Maps display the boundaries, names, and/or codes of state legislative districts (SLDs) in effect for the 2022 election cycle. Two separate map types make up this series: one that displays State Legislative Districts – Upper Chamber (SLDUs) and one that displays the State Legislative Districts – Lower Chamber (SLDLs). Each of these maps shows the extent of the subject SLD, as well as the surrounding SLDs of the same type.
