Census Bureau Supports Web3 Hackathon 2.0 Technical Competition to Spur Economic Growth, Improve Quality of Life in Puerto Rico

Press Release Number CB22-188

NOV. 9, 2022 — The U.S. Census Bureau today announced its co-hosting of the Web3 Hackathon 2.0 Technical Competition in collaboration with the Puerto Rico Blockchain Trade Association (PRBTA), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) - Blockchain Initiative and Puerto Rican non-profit Evolving Space.

A collaboration with the Census Bureau’s program The Opportunity Project (TOP) from Census Open Innovations Labs, the Web3 Hackathon 2.0 challenges civic hackers to design and develop products, platforms and software solutions with blockchain integrations to support infrastructure, economic growth and quality of life in Puerto Rico.

Participants will have the opportunity to advance Puerto Rico’s sustainability efforts by creating blockchain-based solutions using their own or established protocols. Teams will present their prototypes to industry experts and other stakeholders for the opportunity to demo their solution at PRBTA’s December conference.

Nov. 11-Dec. 4, 2022.

The competition is open to anyone interested in co-creating technological or other solutions using federal open data, including:

  • Companies, universities, nonprofits, and students who build digital products in the hackathon.
  • Community leaders, local or national advocates, and people with experience in the competition’s topics who guide tech teams in designing solutions.
  • Product experts who advise teams in developing products sustainable after the hackathon.
  • Experts on open datasets who advise teams on accessing and using data during the hackathon.

Interested registrants who live on the island can go to Engine-4 Coworking Space in Bayamón, Puerto Rico beginning Nov. 11 from 4:30 pm to 9 pm. There will also be at least three onsite meetup opportunities for teams to consult with product advisors before the hackathon deadline.
