DEC. 9, 2021 — Statistics released today from the 2020 Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM) showed the value of shipments in the nation’s manufacturing sector decreased 8.9% to $5.2 trillion in 2020.
Other highlights include:
The 2020 General Statistics for Industry Groups and Industries table from the ASM presents data at the two- through six-digit NAICS levels for employment, payroll, cost of materials, operating expenses, value of shipments, value added and inventories.
The 2020 Geographic Area Statistics tables present manufacturing data for the United States and states at the two- through four-digit NAICS levels and supplemental statistics for the nation and each state at the two-digit NAICS level.
The 2020 ASM provides manufacturing statistics crucial to accurate estimates of domestic production and productivity and to making sound decisions on economic trade policies. Companies, business analysts and trade associations use these data in planning investments, production and marketing. These data are published annually, except in years ending in 2 and 7, when they are included in the manufacturing sector of the economic census.
Questions about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on manufactures were added to – and related data released – as part of the 2020 ASM.
