Michael C. Cook, Sr.

Senior Advisor, Office of the Director

Michael C. Cook, Sr., serves as the director’s senior advisor for strategic communications  and oversees and supports strategic messaging activities and special communication initiatives on behalf of the U.S. Census Bureau. He previously served as chief of the Public Information Office at the Census Bureau, where he directed external and internal communications activities. He was responsible for leading the Census Bureau's editorial and graphic services, internal communications, media relations, and public affairs efforts.

Michael also previously served as chief of the Public Affairs and Media Events Branch and the 2010 Census Media Relations Branch, where he oversaw the public affairs and media relations activities for the award-winning 2010 Census campaign.

Cook began his career at the Census Bureau in 1999 as a marketing specialist during the 2000 Census. He has served as team lead for the exhibits program and as a marketing specialist with a focus on international trade statistics.

In addition to his federal service, Cook has experience in program and marketing communications management with national nonprofits, institutions of higher education and private sector organizations.

Cook has received three Bronze Medal Awards from the Census Bureau for distinguished and superior achievements. He obtained a master’s certificate in project management from The George Washington University and is a graduate of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Executive Leadership Development Program. Cook holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and an M.B.A. from Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
