Julie Iriondo is the Chief of the Media Relations Branch of the Public Information Office.  In her role, she provides media expertise and training, develops and implements communications strategies, and serves on the Editorial Board of America Counts: Stories Behind the Numbers. 

Prior to joining the Census Bureau in 2017, Julie worked 27 years as a Broadcast Journalist. She began her career in Broadcast Journalism at CNN in Washington, D.C., and Moscow, Russia, in 1989. While in Russia, she also met her Idaho-born Marine husband, Phil, which led her back to the United States in 1990.

For the next 26 years, Julie continued to work in various television markets across the country. In 1990, as the Assistant New Director/Anchor/Reporter at KSWT in Yuma, Az., she earned recognition for her coverage of Operation Restore Hope in Somalia. In 1993, Julie moved to South Carolina and worked as a Managing Editor/Anchor/Reporter at WTOC in Savannah, Ga. Five years later, Julie moved to San Diego, Ca., where she spent the next seven years as a Reporter/Producer on the news magazine show, “San Diego Insider.”  She produced several award winning stories and documentaries for Channel 4 San Diego. In 2005, Julie moved to Virginia where she began working as a freelance Reporter/Producer as well as Public Affairs/Media Relations Specialist for clients including the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts where she produced an award winning image and job recruiting campaign for the federal judiciary.

Julie has a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with an emphasis in Broadcast Journalism from Washington State University.
