This report looks at the roughly 18 million Americans, or about 7 percent of the adult population, who were veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces in 2018. Ranging from 18 to over 100 years old, they served in conflicts as diverse as the Korean War and the Global War on Terrorism. This report provides an overview of these men and women, such as how many veterans alive today served in World War II, the characteristics of Vietnam veterans, and how many Gulf War veterans are disabled. The report primarily uses data from the 2018 American Community Survey to describe the demographic, socioeconomic, and health characteristics of veterans by their period of service in the armed forces.
