In Census 2000, 281.4 million people were counted in the United States, a 13.2 percent increase from the 1990 census population of 248.7 million. Population growth from 1990 to 2000 varied geographically, with large population increases in some areas and little growth or decline in others. This report, part of a series that analyzes population and housing data collected from Census 2000, highlights population size and distribution changes between 1990 and 2000 in regions, states, metropolitan areas, counties, and large cities.1
