This report presents population and land area data and maps for the 275 urbanized areas (UAs) recognized by the Bureau of the Census in 1979. Previously published data for the 248 UAs delineated for the 1970 Census of Population and the 27 UAs designated in 1974 are consolidated in this report.
The tables presented here are updates of tables from the Census of Population: 1970, Volume I, Part 1, United States Summary, and Parts 2 through 52, state reports. They incorporate corrections to the component part listings of certain UAs, as published in the correction notes in Volume I, Parts 2 through 52, but do not include corrections to the population of counties, county subdivisions, and places published in the correction notes in Volume I, or made subsequently (see appendix).
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
