This report presents 1970 census population counts for the state of North Dakota by township and city. In the 1970 census, counts were not tabulated by township in North Dakota-as in previous censuses. Prior to the 1970 census, the government of the state of North Dakota had worked with the Bureau of the Census to subdivide the state into larger geographic units called census county divisions (CCDs) and data from the census were published for these areas, rather than for townships.
All data are presented for areas as they existed on January 1, 1970. Although not reflected in the data shown in the table, numerous boundary changes and status changes occurring in the state after January 1, 1970, are noted in the appendix. These post-1970 changes have been utilized in population·updates for federal general revenue sharing purposes in the 1970's.
A map showing the townships and places in North Dakota as they existed on January 1, 1970, also is shown, together with a map index for locating counties on the map.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
