During the 3-year period from March 1970 to March 1973, the estimates from the Current Population Survey indicate that more people moved from metropolitan areas (4,680,000 persons 3 years and over) than moved to metropolitan areas (3,736,000 persons 3 years and over), yielding a net loss to metropolitan areas of 944,000. During this 3-year period, central cities of metropolitan areas continued to experience net outmigration (4,021,000 persons 3 years and over), just as they had during the 1960’s. The mostly suburban balance of metropolitan areas lying outside the central cities continued to experience net immigration (3,077,000), but not enough to offset the loss experienced by central cities.
