(The data presented here are extracted from tables 239, 240, and 241 of Final Report PC(1)-D1, Detailed Characteristics, United States Summary, which contains additional information on employment, industrial and occupational distributions, and other characteristics, as well as more detailed technical explanations.)
At the time of the 1970 census the median age of employed men was 40.2 years and for women it was one year less. Industries with some of the highest median ages for employed men included private households (49.5 years), railroads and railway express service (47.3 years), agriculture (46.3 years), street railways and bus lines (45.8 years), and water transportation (45.0 years). With 2.4 million men employed, agriculture was the largest industry with a median age of 45.0 years or more.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
