1970 Census - Population, Subject Reports: Sources and Structure of Family Income


This report provides detailed cross-classifications of data on the income in 1969 of families, family members, unrelated individuals, and persons in the experienced civilian labor force according to various social and economic characteristics, for the United States, by type of residence. The data are based on the 1970 Census of Population.

The text consists of an introduction and Appendices A through E, which appear after the tables.

Content of the Tables

Major emphasis is placed on the composition of family income, including the major sources of family income, i.e., wages and salaries,
nonfarm and farm self-employment, Social Security, public assistance, and other income.

  • Tables 2, 8, and 10 – poverty status of families and family members
    • Table 8 presents statistics for persons in relation to own income by age, relationship to head, race, and sex cross-classified by family income and poverty status.
  • Table 11 – wage or salary income distributions for 1939, 1949, 1959, and 1969
  • Table A-1 – percent of families for whom family income or income of the family head was allocated for nonresponse

Sample size. All statistics in this report are based on the 5-percent sample adjusted to represent the total population. (See "Data Collection Procedures" in Appendix A.)
