This report presents revised figures on the rural farm and rural-nonfarm populations, which replace the comparable figures shown in the state reports of 1970 Population Census series PC(1)-C, "General Social and Economic Characteristics." The data in the PC(1)-C reports contain a misclassification between the farm and nonfarm components of the rural population. This misclassification, which is compensating between the two components, does not affect the statistics for the rural area as a whole; also not affected are data for urban areas and for the state as a whole.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
