The table presented here shows, for each place of 2,500 inhabitants or more, the population in 1970 and 1960, percent change between the 2 years, land area, and persons per square mile in 1970. Listed in the table are 5,284 cities or other incorporated places and 1,151 unincorporated places in the United States. Similar information is also shown for towns of 2,500 inhabitants or more in the New England states and for places of 2,500 or more in Puerto Rico.
The table presented here is a reprint of table 31 from Final Report PC(1)-A1, Number of Inhabitants, United States Summary, which contains additional summary information on the geographic distribution of the population, as well as more detailed technical explanations and corrections in the counts for certain areas.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
