Content of the Tables
Sample size. The statistics in this report are based on a sample inflated to represent the total population. Tables 1 to 7 are based on the 5-percent sample and table 8 on the 20-percent sample. (See "Data Collection Procedures" in Appendix A.) Statistics for a given occupation or industry category in table 8 may differ from the corresponding figure in tables 1 to 7 because of sampling variability.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
