(This series consists of 52 reports – number 1 for the United States and numbers 2 thru 52
for the States and the District of Columbia in alphabetical order rather than order of
publication.)
This publication is one of a series of 1970 census reports concerned mainly with population and housing trends in the metropolitan areas from 1960 to 1970. The main body of the report consists of an analytical text and a statistical section containing 12 tables on population characteristics and 5 on housing characteristics. There are 2 appendixes showing constituent counties of metropolitan areas and technical definitions and explanations.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
