This report is based on preliminary counts of the population as compiled in the 1970 census field offices. The series consists of 57 reports—number 1 for the United States; numbers 2 through 52 for the states and the District of Columbia in alphabetical order, rather than in order of publication; and numbers 53 through 57 for Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Canal Zone, respectively.
This report presents a summary of the preliminary state population counts previously published in the individual state reports of this series.
This report consists of population counts for the United States, individual states, and outlying areas in the form of tables.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
